Big Hunting Creek...........in the cold

We arrived at 10am with the dashboard temp reading 29. I didnt care at all how cold it was...after a long hunting season I wanted to get out and catch some trout! Patterns consisted of leeches, sculpins, and bugger creations...usual mountain trout winter patterns.
Big fish of the day went to my bro...

Falling springs pa

It was a hot day today but I wanted to get out. I have not visited Falling springs in a few years so decided why not check it out. I spotted a good amount of small bows and little browns but I was after larger quarry. The vegetation at this time is really thick so casting was difficult. I fished weed lines with a sculpin patterns and was rewarded with one nice brown.

Spent some time Sunday on beaver creek...decent sulphur hatch from 4-6pm. Picked fish up mid-day hours on green caddis larvae.

Little falls 1-14-12

The dashboard on my bro's sierra showed a crisp 25 deg around 11am when we arrived. The gunpowder itself was running a little over 200 cfs and around 39 deg under the dam...we decided to start in the meadow section of little falls because it tends to heat up quicker through the day. Got some fish to move on dead drifted angora buggers trailing #20 blood midge larva.

Savage river Md Dec 29th...high cooooold flows

My bro just got back from an 8 month trip to northern Italy for his job...what better way to welcome him home than some winter nymphing!! We had an early start and made it to the PHD hole by 8 am. I spotted a familiar dimple behind a log and some midges floating in the air....a size 20 griffiths gnat produced this gorgeous savage river gem.
The fun was short lived since the temps started dropping and wind started kicking through mid morning.

As we worked our way up river we noticed we were hooking abnormal amounts of bows...as in JUST bows. Seems that the stockers from the lake have been getting through the dam. The dydimo is pretty bad at this time of year also making my czech/high stick nymphing pretty rough. I indi nymphed the deeper holes since wading deep would result in a cold swim. My bro got this good shot of me hooked up with one of the resident browns.

If you are targeting browns I would stay down river below the outfitters shop...black buggers, midge patterns and size 18-20 nymphs will pick up fish in pocket water.
